He almost hadn't noticed the amazed expression on Alex's face. Evan's initial thought was that it was odd that anyone could find it so amazing to be in a military camp. Alex could just be amazed by the fact that his home country had changed so much since he had left. Something in Evan's gut told him otherwise. There was something wrong about this Alex guy but he hadn't the slightest clue why he couldn't get over it. I need to stop worrying about it so much. He shook his head slightly and scanned the surroundings as they continued on to the camp. It was about only a mile away from town, seeing as how it was only temporary.
He couldn't help but smile when he heard Alex's whistling. Music seemed to be the one thing that binded everyone together. No matter which state or country they came from. It only made him wish he had his banjo or a fiddle even. Music was something that he loved and the camp was almost always filled with it by evening. There had only been a few nights where there hadn't been music playing. Well that and they never played music if they were staying hidden form the rebs. Still now he had certain songs playing in his head as they walked into camp.
A creeping feeling began to work it's way up his spine when Alex started to speak again. Alex's glance completely floated of Evan's head since he was to deep in thought, He wants to see his home? From what he had gathered the Confederacy was in a bad way from the way the soldiers looked. He wasn't to concerned with Alex feeling bad or anything, he was concerned with why exactly he wanted to go back to the South. It was his home, but wasn't he going to be fighting for the Union? Evan tried to put these thoughts aside as he started heading over to the section where his tent was. If he got back to some where familiar then he'd feel better and he could grab his pipe and offer Alex some tabacco if he wanted any. He was from the South so he just assumed he wanted to or already had tabacco on him.
He began to slow down as Alex went on though and he felt his heart sink. Pick a side or get away from the shooting? He'd just pick a side off the top of his head without any consideration or thought put into it? No concern for the men he'd kill. He looked towards the ground and wanted to ask Alex these questions but his mouth felt numb. The phrase get away from the shooting was running through his head. He clenched his right fist and tried not to lose control. There was no way Alex knew that he'd ran during the First Bull Run. There was nothing more he wanted to do then to get away from the shooting, but he couldn't. “I-”
A loud shot rang out as he was about to speak. It echoed through camp and Evan's head immediately shot up. It came from the direction of the Potomac. Everyone was beginning to scramble to their guns and officers were shouting out orders. Evan looked at Alex and his brow sunk. He was about to say something then decided to keep his mouth shut. Instead he quickly went to his tent and grabbed his rifle and his cartridge box. He walked back to Alex in a hurried motion as he grabbed one cartridge, “You can stay if you want, it can't be more then a few rebs. I don't blame you if you want to run though.” Just as he finished a few more shots sounded and the heat flushed from Evan's face. With trembling fingers he began the loading procedure, something that he'd repeated more times then he cared to count. When he looked up he had no clue where his regiment was so he just looked at Alex again, “I'm takin' cover in the trees.”
