To the people of Alvernon and Herrsland, places of great castles, courts, balls and taxes, Tavish is a barbaric place. The nation was separated into 13 territories less than three generations ago, when it was united as a kingdom to ward off a war from Alvernon, who desperately wanted access to the sea. The clan to do it was from the 14th clan, Eon MacTavish, first King of Tavish. He had lost most of his sons in skirmishes with the clans, and in battles against Alvernon. With one son left, the kingdom was inherited by Robert MacTavish, who took little pleasure in his wife, and had produced only one daughter. If he could have only produced a son, he could have married his daughter to a prince of Alvernon and ended the tensions on the border. Instead, his daughter was married to a strong clan, the MacAvoys, and they have been ruling the past 20 years.
Tavish is a coastal region, with a rocky, windy coast to the north, that eventually melts to warm sandy beaches in the south. In the north, sheep and goats are herded, there are forests for hunting, and in the south grain farms struggle in the ill-suited soil.
The men of Tavish are gruff warriors. They are strong and decisive, and one more stubborn than the next. i wouldn't recommend getting into a battle of the wits with them, it would probably end up a battle of the fists.
The women are strong as well, in their own way. Because their men are often away fighting, the women have become incredibly resourceful and useful. They know how to survive and make due with very little. There may be some exceptions in the noble class, but for the most part, they are very capable and strong emotionally females.
Furs, wools, laced boots worn by all people (the finer furs and gems by upper classes) along with their willingness to fight at every argument, makes them be seen as "barbaric" by the other northern countries.
